Weekend musings

>> Friday, May 30

I haven't done much posting these days. Blame it on the unreliable connection lately, or this crazy weather that just makes my sinusitis worse, or just the plain fact that my mind just can't seem to focus this past several days. Honestly, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and maybe some soul searching. Plus I have been quite busy running around the campus trying to finalize my class schedules and process my enrollment.

Yes people, I'm going back to school to earn another degree. And no I'm not taking nursing or law, if that's what you're asking. :) It took me several months now to finally decide on what to do next. With some encouragement from family and friends, I think I finally mastered some courage to step up and face my choices.

I don't want to mention yet what my plans are 'cause I don't want to jinx them. I can be superstitious sometimes. I'll just leave you hanging for now... :)

World No Tobacco Day, May 31, '08

>> Tuesday, May 27

I came across this article in the website of WHO. It has a campaign on total ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship. This year's campaign focuses on the following message:

One of the most effective ways countries can protect young people from experimenting and becoming regular tobacco users is to ban all forms of direct and indirect tobacco advertising, including promotion of tobacco products and sponsorship, by the tobacco industry, of any events or activities.
Let us support this campaign. If you want to read more on this issue click here.

Politics and Celebrities

I joined a conversation in dNeero about Presidential elections and celebrities. Here in the Philippines we have our share of celebrities grabbing a seat in the political world. Some celebrities become good government officers, while some started bad and became worse. People are so naive sometimes. They get easily won by big smiles and empty promises. Politics is such a dirty game.

This was supposed to be be a long rant about politics. Maybe I'll just make another entry later.. :) Anyway, here are my answers to the survey:

Crazy weekend

>> Sunday, May 25

I thought my PC went crazy on me when I couldn't load some websites (emphasis on the some). I could load my blogger dashboard, but when I tried to view my blog, I just got a blank page; same with my mails, friendster, and other websites. It happened right after I ran the Spybot-Search&Destroy, and destroyed some so-called spyware.

I'm not really a techy person. I know how to use gadgets and stuff, but when they start to malfunction, I start to go crazy. During times like this, I usually call my brother or some friends who are "experts" in troubleshooting. But when I received a text message yesterday from Lurchie saying she was having problems with her internet connection, I heaved a sigh of relief. I thought I destroyed my PC again. :) Now I can breath.

That was Saturday. Today I thought of checking if my connection is running again unfortunately there was a scheduled all day brown-out in the campus (I'm living inside SU) because they have to rewire or something like that and clear some trees. Anyway, so I was deprived again from my life online for another day. hmph.. Might as well spend this weekend web free and watch some movies.

...BUT I couldn't help myself. So now here I am blogging about my weekend, and wishing I checked my messages earlier 'cause I missed Master Joh's invitation. Sorry MJ! :) Hope you enjoyed your party.

A day in the life of Odie

I noticed my dog, Odie, running around the lawn and barking playfully. My PC is right beside the window, so I looked out if my two doggies are playing. Surprisingly it was only Odie who was running around as if she was playing with something. I just kept on observing her until I noticed that while running, she kept on looking upwards and barking. Then I realized she was playing with this little bird that swoops down on her from time to time. I tried to take a video of them playing but all I got was a hazy picture.

Now, Odie is a bit well-rounded. :) After all these running around and playing, she plops down from exhaustion anywhere she chooses and just lies around or sleeps. Now this part I took a shot… :)

...after a long hard day’s work play..

BurWich

>> Thursday, May 22

I was craving for a burger moments ago, so I though of making one of my own. I rummage our fridge for some ingredients and found some ground meat, cheese, and a few slices of bread. Yey! I can definitely make one pseudo-burger now! :) I just added some flour, salt and pepper to the ground meat, fried it, toasted the bread, added some ketchup and mayo... and VOILA! A burwich (burger-sandwich). It would have been great if I had some lettuce and tomatoes, though. But I forgot to buy groceries yesterday 'cause I was "busy" looking for some jeans and shirts. hehhe

So much for watching my diet... oh well...

David vs David

>> Wednesday, May 21

I've been watching this season's American Idol from the audition up to the finals, and I could say America did good with their votes.

David Archuleta has been my favorite since his audition. Such a young kid, the youngest contestant in fact, with such a great talent. I'm not surprised he sailed through the finals. I'm rooting for David Cook, as well. I love his version of MC's "Always Be My Baby". With his talents, he definitely has a good chance in becoming the next American Idol. The two Davids will face off tonight, and results will be tomorrow.

The parchment is prepared by a qualified scribe (a "sofer stam") who has undergone many years of meticulous training, and the verses are written in indelible black ink with a special quill pen. The parchment is then rolled up and placed inside the case.

Fighting sinusitis

My sinusitis just gets worse and worse these days. Add the abrupt changes in the weather, plus my eating spree this past few weeks, and what do I get? A killer headache. If you are experiencing pain over the cheeks and upper teeth, pain in the forehead, above the eyebrow, behind the eyes, on top of the head, or in both temples, or pain around or behind the eyes then you may be suffering from sinusitis. There are several types of sinusitis, but the two main cases are: acute (caused by viral infection) and chronic (caused by bacterial or fungal infection).

I've been reading some articles about treatment for sinusitis. Here a few remedies I gathered from my readings:

  • Antibiotics. Antibiotics can help eliminate sinusitis caused by a bacterial infection.
  • Corticosteroids. Corticosteroids can reduce swelling if you have severe inflammation of your sinuses.
  • Decongestants and antihistamines. Taken orally or in the form of a nasal spray, decongestants or antihistamines can help dry up or shrink the backed-up mucus and give temporary relief by helping to drain the sinuses.
  • Moisture and humidification. Flushing the nasal cavity with saline nasal sprays can help loosen dried mucus. In dry climates, installing humidifiers in the home can promote nasal drainage.
  • Immunotherapy. If allergies are contributing to the sinusitis, stimulating the antibodies that block the body's reaction to specific allergens may help alleviate the condition.
  • Sinus surgery. This would be the last resort. But it needs to be considered as some sort of cure for severe cases of sinusitis.
There are also natural remedies for sinusitis, for people who don't really like to use drugs and other chemicals.
  • Drink lots of water, tea and other clear beverages
  • Stay away from dairy products. Some doctors believe that dairy products, like cheese, milk, ice cream, may cause more mucus to form.
  • Treat a cold as soon as possible.
  • Eat foods that have lots of antioxidants, e.g. red wine, soybeans, tomatoes, watermelon, leafy greens, and other citrus fruits
  • Steam inhalation helps clear out nasal passages and provides moisture for sinuses. You can also add apple cider vinegar or eucalyptus or peppermint extract to your steam.
There are millions of people (both young and old) who suffer from sinusitis. You can try out those methods of treatments that are natural or unnatural, whichever suits you. I hope this can help those who are suffering from sinusitis these days.

Ice crusher

>> Monday, May 19

I always wanted to have an ice crusher. I was about to buy one that was not so expensive, but a friend of mine told me not to. She bought one, herself, and she was not satisfied with the results. She only got small lumps of ice, not crushed ice! So I decided not to buy that so-called ice crusher, until I ultimate forgot the need (maybe want) to buy one for myself.

The reason why I'm suddenly interested again is that I found this recipe at the back of the can of some evaporated milk. It's called Rocky Road Cooler. As usual the chocolate addict inside me just wants to come out.

Now I'm on the search again for a perfect ice crusher (like the one in the picture), that really crushes ice! :)

(Note to friends: I'm still accepting birthdays gifts.. heheheheh)

2. Apprehensive (If I made the right decision about something)
3. Hungry (I haven't eaten my breakfast yet)
4. Stuck (I just couldn't seem to find a way to wiggle out of this certain situation)
5. Happy (Despite all my worries, I'm still happy with the way my life is going)
6. Hopeful (After all my decisions, both right and wrong, I would still be able to find what I'm looking for)

Weird Dreams

>> Sunday, May 18

According to my very good friend Wikipedia, "dreams are the images, thoughts, and feelings experienced while asleep". I have been having a lot of weird dreams lately. They're not related though. Maybe all dreams are weird one way or the other. I also have dreams about other people's lives. It's like I'm living there lives in those dreams. I have dreams of my life as a baby. I even dreamed of being inside my mother's womb. Now how weird is that?

I found this interesting site about dreams and their interpretations. Dreams are messages that teach us something about ourselves. It states there that dreams are somewhat linked to our reality. Now the one thing I remember most about my dreams, maybe the most
common in them, is the ocean, and there are always waves. From what I gathered, seeing an ocean in a dream represents emotions and feelings, an indication of some spiritual renewal. The rising waves indicate struggles and overwhelming emotions. The crashing waves, however, indicate tenderness and relaxation. Now I'm confused. The latter is just the complete opposite of the other one.

Recurring dreams are often caused by a certain unsettled situation in your life or an unsolved problem. Looking back at the interpretation of my recurring dreams, I just realized that a bit of it is quite true. I'm not discussing it in this post, though, maybe later.

Here are some tips of overcoming recurring dreams from the site I mentioned earlier:

1. In understanding your recurring dream, you must be willing to accept some sort of change or undergo a transformation.

2. You must be willing to look within yourself and confront whatever you may find no matter how difficult it my be.

3. You must be able to look at the dream from an objective point of view. Try to get pass the emotional and reactive elements of the dream and get down to the symbolic images. Many times dreams are masked by elements that are disturbing preventing you to delve any deeper. This is a defense mechanism that your unconscious may be putting up.

4. Be patient. Do not get discourage if these dreams still recur even after you thought you have come to understand them.

5. Learn to accept yourself truly and fully.

Sweet dreams everyone! :)

Turning 24

>> Thursday, May 15

The sun finally came out! Perfect timing 'cause it's a special day for yours truly (the title's so obvious.. hehehe). I received a lot of greetings from friends and family, at the start of my day. I'm glad someone still remembers this day(?). It seems the older we get, the less we think about our special days.

Anyway, I'm glad it didn't rain today so we were able to make chicken barbecue (thank God for the sunny weather). A birthday won't be a birthday if there's no chicken (my mother always jokingly says). I chose to make spaghetti as I was craving for some these past few days (note: NO I'm not pregnant!). This was my planned menu for today. That and my fruit cocktail, but lo and behold!, my mother secretly ordered my favorite seafood dish, Steamed Fish with Thousand Island dressings, and it was huge! It was about 2 kilos.. hmmm.. yum! yum!

Let me just post some pics so I can show off (give me a chance, it's my day..heheheh....)

This my birthday feast...

Dessert anyone..? (this is good for the blood sugar.. hahahah)

This is what I enjoy about birthdays, the foooooooood.. I have a good excuse for pigging out for one day, right? Right! AND I got to celebrate it with my family and friends....

Picture taken by Ibby the wibby

That's Lurchelle and Ibby Wibby

I enjoyed my day. And... oh my brother gave me something too.... a Kingston 4.0GB USB..

I was always borrowing his, so he gave me one instead. heheh I don't know what I'm gonna to with this 'cause usually I'm at home, but I still love it.. hehehe Thanx bro!

Every birthday I wait for 10:45 pm to come to greet myself a happy birthday and to offer a little prayer. My mom told me that was the exact time I was born, so it's a somewhat special moment for me. But tonight was different. E.M.A. offered to stay-up with me so he can greet me too. He just had a very long day at work, yet even if he's in a lot of stress today (and wants to crash into a slumber), he still choses to wait with me. We spent the whole night on the phone (we're using Sun Cellular so calls are unlimited..) while waiting for 10:45 to come. It's so nice to think how he can be so sweet sometimes without even knowing it.. hehhe *blush* so cute...

So... my day started great, the food was delicious, and the company was awesome! And the one thing I like about it the most is I got to end it with someone I love... mmmmwaaahhh!!!

Now it's time for me to catch some snooze.. Thank you all for making my day... Goodnight everyone!

What's In Your Purse

I just got tagged by ZTe. She started this tag so all I have to do is follow her instructions... And it goes: "All you need to do is list down at least 10 items that can be found inside your purse or bag at any given time and then tag as many peeps as you want. I believe this tag can let you get to know a person more based on what is inside their bags. Then, copy the person-who-tag-you's items and add it below your list. It would serve as a comparison to see if you have the same stuff in your bags and so on."

My purse has:
1. Wallet (the basic stuff: bills, cards, IDs)
2. Coin purse (I tend to separate my coins and my bills so I won't have a hard time looking for a change)
3. Cellphones (one for my Globe sim and one for my Sun Cellular sim)
4. Hairbush/comb (what kind of girl wouldn't have one?)
5. Pen (just in case I need one)
6. Keys (of course I wouldn't want to be locked out would I?)
7. Tissue/Wet wipes (in case my face gets too oily.. heheh)
8. Alcohol (for hygienic purposes)
9. Lubricant for contact lenses (dried contact lenses gets very uncomfortable and it irritates the eye)
10. Clamp/Clip/Hair tie (in case it gets too hot, and I need to tie my hair back)

Z's purse items:
1. Wallet (of course!)
2. Coin purse (it seems I have a lot of coins)
3. Pen
4. Cellphones (yes, I have two...)
5. Ipod Video
6. School Id (unfortunately I still need to enter the campus grouds)
7. Lip Gloss (currently using Sweet Talk by Victoria's Secret)
8. Hair Doctor (brush/comb)
9. Pieces of paper (I need to throw them away)
10. Hand Sanitizer (Bath & Body Works Country Apple)

They say what's inside a lady's purse can tell what kind of person she is. Well tell me what kind of person I am... :) So... what's in your purse?

Catch some C's

>> Friday, May 9

My ma woke me up 'coz my father wanted me to find some info about papermaking (it's for his research). So far I was doing good 'til I got a little bored and started to visit other sites (friendster, blogs, blah blah) THEN I got tagged by Lurtsil. :) It seems I have to name 10 things that start with letter "C"

  • Crazy (is this a thing?) is what I'm feeling right now knocking my brain looking for words that starts with C. :)
  • Chocolate (Tobleron) is what I'm eating right now, to booze my mood (and I mean booooze)... heheheh
  • Cellphone(s) is the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night that I look at.
  • Carbonara is what I'm planning to make for lunch later.
  • Carbohydrates is mostly what I'm eating everyday.. hehehe
  • Cheese is what I'm craving right now. Extra cheese on pizza. yum yum....
  • Computer is my constant companion day in-day out... :)
  • Coffee is the first thing I smell every time I go to Lee's Supermarket.
  • Career is what I'm trying to figure out these days.
  • Cat's cry is what I just heard right now, with a reply bark or two from my doggies. :)
Wew... I guess that's it.. So you came this far, now I'm tagging YOU!

New 7 Wonders of Nature

>> Tuesday, May 6

These are the top 10 (as of May 6, 2008):

1. Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Quảng Ninh province, Vietnam. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes.

2. Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh

Cox's Bazar is a fishing port and district headquarter in Bangladesh. It is claimed to be the world's longest natural sandy sea beach (120 km) including mud flats.

3. Ganges River, India/Bangladesh

The 2510 km long Ganges is a major river in the Indian subcontinent flowing east through the eponymous plains of northern India into Bangladesh. The river and its tributaries drain a large and fertile basin with an area of about one million square kilometers that supports one of the world's highest density human populations.

4. Amazon River, South

The South American Amazon is the largest river in the world by volume, with a total flow greater than the top ten rivers worldwide combined. It accounts for approximately one-fifth of the total world river flow and has the biggest drainage basin on the planet. Not a single bridge crosses the Amazon. Building bridges

>> Sunday, May 4

It's hard to make a relationship work, but it 's much harder if you put miles and miles and even oceans (in my case seas) in between you two. There will always be questions, anxieties, and sometimes jealousy that could add to the difficulties. If you ask me does long distance relationships work? I would say no, but here I am trying to make this one work. :)

Here are some bits and pieces of tips I came across while web hopping:

1. Ask the important questions at the onset, to make sure you are both clear on the parameters of the relationship. These can be difficult and awkward questions to ask, but will save you great heartache and misunderstanding down the line. Example: "Are you open to the possibility of relocating if the relationship should become more serious?"

2.
Communicate in some way every day, more than once if possible. Since you won't be seeing each other, it's important to establish and maintain an emotional connection. These don't have to be long, in-depth conversations (though those should occur sometimes). Tell each other about your little triumphs and tragedies. Ask for advice. Use an instant messenger program or VoIP for real-time chat, or web cams for that visual connection, but while instant messaging and e-mails play a large role in long distance relationships, remember that they can in no way replace verbal communication. E-mail is great so make sure you use it, especially if long-distance phone calls put a strain on your budget (we're using suncellular so it's not too costly..). Write love letters. Send small gifts or flowers for no reason. In this case, quantity is as important as quality. You may discover an advantage over others whose partner is close at hand - you don't take communication for granted!

3.
Take advantage of the benefits a long distance relationship offers: more time with friends and/or family, no small arguments like where to go, the pleasure of seeing your sweetheart again after a long absence, time to mull your options (rather than snapping at your partner impulsively) before you respond to that email s/he wrote that seemed so rude the first time you read it, etc. Most important, being far apart gives you a chance to maintain your individuality - something that can get lost in the shuffle when couples spend all their free time together.

4.
Pursue common interests, even if it means pursuing them apart. If there's a movie you're both interested in seeing, watch it individually and then call each other afterward and talk about it. Read a certain book at the same time. Stargaze while on you're on the phone. Set your watches to go off at the same time every day, and synchronize your alarm with that of your partner. Make it a point to think of each other when your watch goes off, and revel in the fact that he or she is thinking about you, too. Find creative ways to bond.

5.
Avoid the temptation to be controlling. People have free will and no one can or should control another person. As long as you are both interested in being in the relationship, you will stick with it and distance will not make a difference. As soon as one of you decides the other is not a good match - or someone else is a better match - your relationship ends, whether you live 3000 miles apart, two streets over, or share the same bed with your wedding picture on the wall. You are going to have to trust each other completely if this relationship is going to work.

6.
Talk about your future together. Assuming that ultimately you'd want to live together, discussing how you're going to get to that point will help you prove to each other that the relationship is going somewhere and that your efforts and frustrations are not in vain.

7.
Know when to say good-bye. While this is tough in any relationship, this can be especially hard over long distances. When communication becomes one-sided or sparse for too long and for no apparent reason, when arguments (yes, you'll have them) become too frequent, when the whole thing just seems like more trouble than it's worth, it's time to re-evaluate the relationship. Either you'll decide to go your separate ways, or you'll get closer for having overcome another obstacle to your happiness together.

8.
Remember things will get better with time, and even the relationship will become better. Have hope.
